What happens during a liposuction procedure at Gary Horndeski MD?
At Gary Horndeski MD, we perform liposuction under general anesthesia, which means that the patient will be asleep for the procedure’s entire duration, around one to two hours. However, before we can begin with liposuction treatment, we will have an initial consultation with the patient and our plastic surgeon, Dr. Horndeski, to ensure that the patient can safely receive liposuction and Dr. Horndeski can develop a treatment plan. This consultation will consist of a discussion of the patient’s medical history, medication use, treatment goals, and an analysis of the treatment area by Dr. Horndeski. During this analysis, Dr. Horndeski will mark out the areas on your body where liposuction will be performed.
After the consultation, we can move forward with treatment and place the patient under general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken hold, Dr. Horndeski and his medical assistants will make small incisions in the treatment area. He will then insert a cannula tube through these incisions, which is a plastic tubing used for the removal of fluid from the body, into the subcutaneous fat and the deep fascia. Either a suction device or a syringe will be attached to the plastic tubing to extract the targeted fatty tissue. Once a safe amount of fat has been removed, Dr. Horndeski and his assistants will stitch the incisions back together to conclude the procedure. After liposuction, you will need assistance in getting home and in your recovery. As such, we recommend that you arrange with a close friend or family member to be available to take you home and stay with you as you recover.
What is the recovery time like for a liposuction procedure?
While complete recovery from liposuction may not occur for one to two months after the procedure, most patients can return to work within one week and normal activities within two weeks. You may still experience some swelling in the treatment area after two weeks, for which we may recommend wearing a compression garment to control the swelling if it is necessary to do so. You will also most likely experience moderate pain in the first few days following liposuction, but Dr. Horndeski will prescribe you with some pain medication to help manage your discomfort.
What areas of the body can receive liposuction?
While stomach liposuction is the most common liposuction area, many areas of the body can safely receive liposuction. These areas include the abdomen, ankles, back, buttocks, calves, chest, chin, hips, neck, thighs, and upper arms. In some cases, liposuction can also be used to treat gynecomastia, or enlarged male breast tissue.
